May 2020 Update
We have very exiting news: in December 2019, the Government of Botswana moved to provide HIV care and medication to all. This includes both citizens, who were previously covered, as well as the large number of non-citizens living in Botswana.
Before December 2019, donations to Cover the Globe went toward providing HIV medication for some 500 children and families at our partner clinic Maipelo. Maipelo is now working to ensure these people can receive their medication from the government program.
While we are thrilled that the government now provides HIV medication, the children and families of Maipelo still need other medications and services, including:
medication for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and depression
pap smears to screen for cervical cancer
care for pregnant and new mothers
family planning
psychological support and counseling
free HIV testing for family members
We are also working to address the impact of the COVID-19 crisis. During these difficult times, it is challenging for parents to find work. There is a real risk of extreme hunger, and several families have reported going several days without food.
Maipelo is starting to distribute food parcels to the families it serves. Maipelo volunteers have also worked with these families to ensure they have enough medication, delivering it as needed.
Here are some photos of food donations. If you choose to donate to Cover the Globe, 100% of your gift will go directly toward providing services like food assistance to families during this difficult time.
