February 2019 Update
In February’s Maipelo clinic, we saw about 45 children and family members. Our team included physicians from a variety of fields including pediatrics, gynecology, and psychiatry. We were excited to learn that one more baby and toddler tested HIV negative after receiving the treatment provided by generous supporters like you.
One of the people who stopped by was Vimbai, a woman living with HIV who is in her third trimester pregnant with twins (!). Last month, we got her started on treatment to decrease the likelihood that her twins with be born with HIV. We also saw three pregnant women who were in their first trimester. One of them is 42 years old and desperate to have a baby after a recent miscarriage. We will continue to provide these ladies with care to ensure that they and their babies are healthy.
9-year-old Tapiwa also visited our clinic. Unfortunately Tapiwa was born with HIV, but through Maipelo he is able to access the life-saving treatment he needs to stay healthy. He was originally given a medication called Aluvia to help manage the HIV. He experienced a side effect of vomiting, so he stopped taking the medication. We were able to give him a different medication that will hopefully have less side effects, and will continue to monitor his situation going forward.
Thank you again for taking the time to learn about how Cover the Globe is working towards its mission of ensuring that HIV care is available to all. Please consider sharing this post with family and friends as well, so they can learn more about people like Vimbai and her family!
